New Year's Resolution List

I don't normally make these lists because when I think a change is necessary I implement it right away instead of waiting for a significant date. However, this year some changes and big ideas happen to be taking place at the exact right time for such a list, so here it is:

1. Smile more (I don't do this nearly enough, for how happy I really am)
2. Take my dogs (and daughter) on more walks
3. Create more works of art, painting, ceramics and such
4. Be a better teacher, be more prepared, more knowledgeable, more engaging.
5. Continue on my coffee-less lifestyle until at least march 2011
6. Make my Etsy store a success
7. Post more D.I.Y. projects on this blog
8. Nurture our garden into edible food
9. Practice my self defense techniques, shooting, knife skills and hand to hand
10. Continue saving $$ for summer (paycheck-less) and for traveling
11. Eat Better, MORE veggies/complete proteins/organic produce and LESS sugar/sucanat
12. Go to Yoga at least once a week
13. Practice languages; Spanish, Russian, German, Italian
14. Be a better mom (including holding Sonja Sweetness more, teach her more, stop being lazy)
15. Be a better wife (including cooking more, cleaning more, say thank you more and the such)

Have a good list? share it, I'd love to read yours!
Happy NEW YEAR!

D.I.Y. Painted Closet

I had some spare time last week when my sister came over to watch Sonja and I made good use of it. I'd been putting off this project because I just didn't want to have to clean up the paint mess or put Sonja down, but here are the befores and afters of the closet project in Cupcake's room.

Before.

After DIY wall correction.

After. Finally, Finished the way it should be. CHALK PAINT CLOSET!
p.s. Ignore the baseboard situation- that's still unfinished.

Happy Chalk Painting!

DIY Car Seat Installation

I forgot to mention 2 things from previous Momma Mondays.

1. We returned that stroller and car seat I mentioned in a previous post, when Husband's Nonnie saw it, she said it was too big and bulky. The reason his parents has gotten it for us was at her request for when she was babysitting. Since she didn't like it, they took it back. I'm still on the hunt for a small collapsible stroller for her, preferably used. I'll update you when we find one we like.

2. We had to get a new car seat. After a minor fight about her safety with the last one, when I said I didn't like how it moved, Husband told me he installed according to the directions (which was true) it wasn't until I googled if a car seat should move that we found the problem. The old car seat that we got from a family friend was too big for my car and it wasn't properly attaching to the LATCH system and for other various reasons it wasn't secure enough. After researching the issue more, Husband agreed it wasn't safe and we needed a new fit. Some things to note when installing a car seat; it should not touch the back seats of the front chairs and should not move more than an inch sideways, also it should be in the center of the back seat unless YOUR CAR MANUAL says the side seats are safe (which mine are, however upon side impact- the center is always a safer option). I got this one from Target, it is also safe up to 35 lbs (the old was until 22 lbs.) and that is important as you want your child rear facing as long as possible to prevent internal decapitation, other serious injuries and possibly death:

It's attached with a seat belt as we never take the car seat out of the car, even though this one does come with a base to make it possible.

Look at all that space between the car seat and driver's seat (before they were touching! a big NO-NO)
This one also has this super cool safety feature to let you know it's installed at the proper angle. The old seat didn't have this.

I now know this seat is installed correctly, however if I had any questions or concerns I could contact my local fire department and set up a time for them to inspect the seat. If you are installing a car seat yourself you can always use your fire department as a resource to double check your installation.

Happy Safe Baby Transporting!

Sonja's First Christmas Gifts

What do you buy a baby whose mom says NO new gifts please! and whose Grandma is a shopoholic? see below to find out:

Above: an extra set of cloth gdiapers (BEST DIAPERS!), a non-plastic toy because kids do need some entertainment, and because she needed another $3 to get the free shipping; Organic whole wheat cereal for when our lil' Cupcake isn't so little and is starting to eat real food (within in the next few months!)-from Grandma and Grandpa L.

Eco Friendly Potty Chair

Stock image of the biodegradable potty from ourgreenhouse.com and not pictured: some organic cotton onesies -from Grandma and Grandpa L.

Above: a thrifted boutique find from Aunt A. Juicy Jumpsuit!

Above: Regifted books from her cousins E. & C.

Above: (not pictured: organic cotton outfit from H&M) from my Aunt Chris and Steve Organic cookbook for babies and toddlers

Above: Some gifts from her momma and papa too. (we got her a natural wood teether, organic wood rattle, organic cupcake onesie, and the such)

Above: front and back of sighfoo shapes (they're made from old wool sweaters available on etsy) from her Grandma and Grandpa S.

Above: Authentic Norwegian stocking from Husband's Aunt J. (they're from Norway, these are actually regifted stockings as well as they're sent to his Aunt every year and she had too many to know what to do with)

Above: Etsy dress from her Uncle W. (I don't know the shop name though- sorry)

Above: Nature books from her Auntie Gretchen (made on 98% post consumer waste recycled paper) and a cute little cupcake clip from her trip to New Jersey.

Above: Diaper covers from Rae Gun @ Etsy.com from her Aunt Em.

Above: handmade and painted cupcake metal artwork from Aunt Brittany and the B. family.

Okay, so clearly people did not listen to me or my requests to not give sonja un-necessities, but I think we'll use most of what she got, and the stuff we hardly use I'll be able to sell to a consignment store when she outgrows it or I can donate it to another friend. She got a lot of clothes, new clothes, which is a little frustrating since there are SOOO many baby clothes already in the world, but they are cute clothes and I will reuse them for future kids and give them to friends with kids- so they will get reused. These were just the most notable gifts I thought people would like to see, I appreciate every thoughtful item she received so I don't want to sound negative. I just really appreciate it when people listen to my reuse/handmade/necessities requests for gifts. I want her to use everything she has, unlike lot of kids who have so much stuff they're ungrateful for it all. We're trying to teach Sonja that all resources are important and not to be wasted, that for every item she acquires something or someone had to sacrifice something to make it or for her to get it.

Hope you enjoyed Baby's First Christmas Gift Review.

Orange Chocolate Cookies

A Christmas Tradition I started when I was about 16, I don't remember where I got this recipe originally and I've modified it slightly (are you surprised?), but I don't like to take credit for something I didn't totally come up with. No matter where I got this recipe, it's here, now, for you. Enjoy.

What you'll Need:

1 Cup Organic Butter (or vegan substitute)

2 Cups Whole Wheat Unbleached White Flour

½ Cup Powdered Sugar, sifted

1 Cup Mini Chocolate Chips (vegan or dark chocolate chips work just as well)

1 Teaspoon Orange Peel Grated

1 Teaspoon Orange Extract

½ Cup Pecans – Finely chopped

What You'll do with it all:

Using a mixer; blend butter butter; gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Stir in orange rind and orange flavoring. Gradually add flour.

Shape dough into a long roll ¾ inch wide; cut roll into 2 inch pieces. Place on greased cookie sheet.

Bake at 350° for ten minutes, or until light brown. Cool cookies on wire rack. If they break while moving, stop and allow to cool completely before attempting to move them.

Melt chocolate chips in microwave oven or in top of a double boiler over simmering water.

Drizzle chocolate onto cookies, then roll in chopped nuts or sprinkle them on top.

Store in covered container. Makes 4 dozen cookies.

Momma Monday no. 20

Monday I had the day off- nice to be able to hang out with Sonja for a few extra hours.

Tuesday we had school but it was an easy day and I like my students. They are all so talented. Sonja enjoyed some time with her Aunt Brittany while I was teaching, normally she'd be with her "Aunt" Gretchen but this week my Brother-In-Law took her to New York to surprise her with... you guessed it, a proposal in Central Park. How Romantic! or Cold I'm not sure which one... anyway, now she's really going to be Aunt Gretchen! And, in just over a year from now lil' Cupcake will be a lil' Flowergirl.

Wednesday, I locked myself out of the house, with Sonja inside... had to resort to using a kettle bell to smash the door knob off our back door. It was a little frustrating to break a $20 lock because of my carelessness but I was distracted and of course SLC's safety comes first, and waiting for someone to bring me keys was simply not an option.

Thursday I got some serious artwork done! I completed 2 more watercolor paintings as choices for my giveaway (click here to see original post on how to enter!). I'm working on a new series inspired by the toxic diet most people follow and my cravings for sweets both pre and post natal. The series is called Death by Decadence. Sonja was a little needy today, not that, that is a bad thing, I just mean she was fussy and needed to be held, so I ended up working on the paintings, and this blog while both nursing and holding her.

Friday was Christmas Eve(and Sonja's 3 month birthday) and as tradition in our family we went to Husband's Nonnie's House and had a big sea food feast. I did some much needed house work and one last Christmas gift item before dressing Sonja up in her Christmas outfit.

Sonja's First Christmas was really great. She got a few items which I'll be posting about later. She was held by everyone and only got fussy when she was really tired. Luckily, I was able to get her to sleep without her rocking chair. I was also able to bake a vegetable medley and cookies which I'll be posting later on RenameFood.blogspot.com because my mom, Luke and Jess and his mom came over and between the 5 of us someone was able to hold Sonja so we could make food for the day after Christmas. My sister also came over and made cinnamon rolls from her unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook- we love H.P. I love the holidays mostly because I love food. Although, it didn't quite feel like Christmas on Christmas this year because my parents wouldn't let us open any gifts until the 26th when my older sister and her family were coming over...

Sunday was the day my extended family got together to celebrate. We went to my parents around noon and hung out with my sister and Sonja's cousins. Finally, at about 1:45 we were able to open our presents and Sonja slept through it all on her daddy's chest, best part of the day by far. My mom is a shopoholic and bought Sonja more clothes than she needed to and stocking stuffers too. I ended up holding SLC more than I was planning to, good thing I brought my wrap. My back has been killing me lately, the pain is awful, almost like my early/mid labor back pains. I hate it, but I love holding Sonja- thankfully the wrap does position her in a good way and distributes her weight more evenly than just holding her. I'm thankful to have such wonderful and thoughtful friends and family in our lives.

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season, and Happy Momma Monday!

Hope you're having a wonderful winter day!

Buckwheat Banana Pancakes and Bird's Nest Dinner

You might know me and my love for breakfast for dinner, and if you don't now you do! It's seriously my favorite EVER. Here is our dinner combo. from this week, I'm tagging it as "breakfast" because that's what it really is, but please feel free to enjoy this meal anytime of the day. The recipes below are not my own creations. They come from the Vegetarian Times Magazine. As always, we've tweaked them ever so slightly.

First the Buckwheat banana Pancakes:

What you'll need:
1 cup organic buckwheat flour
1 cup organic regular flour
2 bananas
juice of a fresh lemon -ours weren't ripe enough yet :(
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 and 1/3 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp organic maple syrup and more for surving
2 cups almond milk (organic when available)
2 tbsp canola oil
1 egg (cage free, vegetarian fed)
pecans

What you'll do with it:
Mix 2 cups almond milk with lemon juice in mixing bowl, let stand for 5 minutes. Combine flours, baking powder, pinch of salt (optional) and baking soda in a larger bowl. Whisk egg into almond milk mixture, add oil and maple syrup. stir flour mixture into "milk" mixture and fold in sliced bananas. use coconut oil spray to coat the griddle, heat over medium heat. Add pancake mix to griddle and cook pancakes, (when bubbling flip and cook about 2 minutes longer). Top with pecans and serve with Organic Maple Syrup.

Bird's Nest:

What you'll need, individual measurements:
1 egg (free range, vegetarian fed)
1 slice of toast
1 slice of organic tomato
herbs to taste (dried basil, salt, pepper)
1 ramekin (I bought mine at World Market 4 for $2.99)
Cheese of your choice

What you'll do with it:
Using a rolling pin, roll the bread flat, stuff into ramekin to create nest form. Drop one whole egg into the bread nest, top with herbs and cheese and finally add the slice of tomato. bake in the oven (or toaster oven) at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Allow to cool for a few minute and remove from ramekin if desired. Serve Warm, yoke may be gooey.

Enjoy!

Functional Friday No. 19

Receiving Blankets.
More specifically receiving blankets as changing station covers.

So, I originally wanted a changing station cover from target, I was going to get a pink one if we had a girl or blue one for a boy. Well, I ran out of target gift money quicker than I thought and had tons of blankets I wasn't using for anything. That, combined with the fact that Sonja would pee EVERY time we'd change her diaper led me to this brilliant idea.

I pre-line the pad with blankets and each time she gets a change and she pees (which happens less often now that we're potty training) I just pull off the top blanket and the new one is underneath. This also works well for when she poops in the toilet but I still have to wipe her- sometimes theres a little mess on her bottom and this way I just remove the blanket she was laying on. BEST NEWS: it's free and it's reusing.

Happy Functional Friday!

Natural Changing Station

I thought I'd share my Cupcake's little changing station:

Above, kerr jar with water in it. organic cotton cloth wipes. olive oil. ball jar with corn starch in it. (in the background: my mother's and siblings' baby scale- cute right? it's over 50 years old!)

The above ingredients are all you really need for a healthy diapered baby.

Directions: take cloth wipes, dip in water, squeeze. wipe bottom. use corn starch in place of baby powder (speaking of which, have you ever read the ingredients on baby powder? yeah, some of those items are caustic, meaning bad for you, meaning they get into your baby and your lungs and can cause cancer or other illnesses), if your baby has a rash or is slightly red or at your discretion rub some olive oil on their bottom instead of the corn starch, it will help relieve slight irritations and also moisturizes their delicate skin. Wash your cloths with a earth friendly skin friendly detergent (we use 7generations detergent) and reuse.
Seriously, parents, it's that easy. Plus, think about how much money you save by reusing these clothes as opposed to buying disposable wipes that have been coated in who knows what?!

Happy Diaper Changing!

Co-Sleeping

I wanted to take a minute to talk about the pros and cons of co-sleeping and dispel some myths that go along with it.

1. co-sleeping is not safe.
Not true. It is not safe if you are overweight, a drinker (even occasionally), a drug user, on medication, or you sleep with other small children or pets.

2. you will smoosh your baby.
I will not smoosh my baby. As any new mom can testify; I am constantly checking her breathing and am startled awake every time she moves. it's built into us to know our surroundings as mothers. The reasons listed above can influence your ability to be alert enough if sleeping with a baby.

3. you will smother your baby with the blankets.
Simple solution; remove all unnecessary blankets and pillows from the bed. We use one comforter, and 1 pillow each. Also the mattress we have is not sooo soft that she can smother herself in it.

4. your baby won't know how to fall asleep without you.
Just because they bond with you and get more comfortable with sleeping with you doesn't mean they don't know how, it just means they don't like it as much. You like sleeping with your spouse right? you might have a slightly harder time falling asleep without them, but you can do it. Plus, if baby is sleeping well in your bed to begin with why would you kick them out?

5. you can't be intimate if you co-sleep.
Hello?! as a new parent you already have a hard time finding a good moment to be intimate. Just get a little more creative with the locations, it will be good for your sex life anyway.

over the myths? Here are some other great things to note:

1. Co-sleeping makes breast feeding easier. I literally lift up my shirt and she latches! I fall back asleep and so does she. Once she's done, I awaken (remember any movement or non-movement wakes me up) and recover my boob and fall back asleep.

2. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. Be informed. Read a book about it. But, please, don't let uneducated (on the subject) people tell you it's dangerous and believe them, if you take their uneducated opinion at face value you might miss out on some valuable sleep (and wonderful cuddling time) It has been forced down so many people's throats that co-sleeping is dangerous, so a new mom might decide that she better go feed her in the chair in the living room or on the couch. She is SO tired she falls asleep in an unsafe manner and ends up smooshing the baby. That is not a healthy co-sleeping situation, a bed with the appropriate amount of room would be a better solution to trying to nurse somewhere else without as much room. I guess my point is; use common sense.

3. Non-organic cribs and mattresses off gas. The fumes and flame retardants emitted from a hand-me-down mattress and even new mattresses can cause nervous system damage! know your sleep surfaces, since cribs are temporary most people skimp on the organic aspect because of the outrageous price and the fumes from a baby sleeping in their own bed can be more detrimental than co-sleeping. (p.s. please don't use the argument; I slept in a crib and I turned out fine, yeah so did I, but with a nation suffering from a plague of autism and ADHD and such, I'd rather not take my chances with my daughter)

Hope this was informative enough to help you consider your sleeping options as a parent.

-Jenn

*disclaimer, if you do choose to co-sleep don't cite me as the expert, I'm not , like I said do your own research. I've done mine :)

Momma Monday no. 19

Sonja sat up this past week!

Husband tickled her while she was in my lap eating dinner and she she shot up out of reflex. Once she realized she could sit up she kept doing it. I got a video but due to husband's request I'm not posting it. SORRY.

Got the Moby Wrap figured out this past week! I bought it after the baby shower with Target money but I was a little overwhelmed by the thick instructional booklet. The Snuggli we have is pretty self explanatory but it's also very rigid and now that little Cupcake isn't so little (12 pounds!) I need something that distributes the weight more efficiently. The wrap is like a little cozy blanket, I like it wayyyy more!

Also, got Sonja's special order cupcake teether last week, kind of looks like a house, but I love it anyway. Find it on etsy by clicking here.

As you might have seen in my previous post, I've been sorting SLC's clothes. She's out grown most of her 0-3 month outfits and is working on her 3-6 month clothes now! Also, can I just rant for a minute about the stupidity of baby clothes sizing?! What is with some being 3-6, 6 months or weight?? if it says 6M that means it will fit her until about 6 months or that's when I should put her into the outfit?? when I compared weight some of them were more like start at 6 months and one said 6M (10-15lb) but Sonja was 10 lb at around 2 months... not 6. Anyway, it would make sooo much more sense to just do it by weight since all babies are different and not all 6 month olds weigh the same. Just a thought. Or maybe this should be enough of a reason to get me to make her clothes myself... we'll see.

Went to a breastfeeding class hosted at my Midwife's Birthing Center Babymoon Inn on Thursday. Sonja and I went to support the future moms in their breastfeeding efforts. We shared our experience breastfeeding and apparently Sonja did have a bit of a latch issue which she self corrected as her mouth got bigger. I was in a lot of pain the first 2 weeks of breastfeeding. When she would first latch, I would wince but then she'd eat and that discomfort would fade. I guess I should have called a lactation consultant but I'm stubborn and that pain was bearable so I just kept going, plus when my mom mentioned that the first 2 weeks are the hardest I believed her. Now, I now for next time :)

Sonja was 12 weeks on Friday! And, obviously, we're still breastfeeding. I can't believe some people only do it for 6 months (like my mom) that would mean I'm half way done with that experience. This bonding time is so special, I think my heart will break when we're done with it. I love feeding her and she holds my hand and looks up with her loving, thankful eyes. I think it's a wonderful experience and I plan on letting her self wean but I also have a goal of at least 1 year hopefully to 2 years. The amount of medical evidence of breast milk and it's health benefits for both mother and child are unbelievable! I want her to be the healthiest possible person. And she'll have to be, since were not vaccinating. Did you know there are stories of breast milk curring cancer and prolonging cancer patients lives? Google it.

Saturday was my second yoga class and it went well. I had to go to child's pose more often than I liked but it was an advanced class, and I did pretty well; considering I hadn't been in over 11 weeks.

Sunday, my bestest friend (well one of them) came in to visit from Denver. I love her and miss her tons. She's my creative other half. I'm at a loss for creative inspiration without her and also, yoga buddyless. One day I hope for her and few other friends and family members to finally meet back up on a huge plot of land that we tend and live off of... hopefully in the not too distant future. It would be wonderful to have a small community of artists and like minded people together. I can't wait for it! Anyway, this bestest of mine hadn't met Sonja. But how could you not love her?! She actually bought her the cutest second hand Juicy Couture jump suit. It was Sonja's first Christmas present- even though it was from someone who doesn't even celebrate Christmas. We (Alex) made dinner and I drew! Seriously, my other creative half. I was able to actually draw a pretty cute picture while hanging out and holding Sonja (below is the work in progress, I've actually drawn more since I took it). So thankful for her to be able to visit. I really enjoyed her visit and dinner. Hopefully, I get more time with her this week before she leaves.

Do you like it so far?

Happy Momma Monday!

DIY Baby Clothes Sorting

What you'll need:
boxes or bags (reuse shower gift bags like myself or find something else to reuse)
labels (I reused old envelopes with the wrong return address on them)
unwanted or too small baby clothes.

What you'll do with them:
Label what you want to do with the clothes. I labeled mine; Keep Unisex, give to friend GIRL, Sell, Sell (spring/summer), Keep GIRL. This way I was able to keep anything really meaningful for a boy or girl and the really sentimental girl stuff (even if we don't have more kids I can give Sonja her GIRL clothes). If we do have more kids I can bust out the unisex box or bag and have a wardrobe almost instantly. For some of the good quality stuff that just wasn't my favorite I rotated between selling and giving to a friend. I had a friend send me a lot of clothes so I figure I should pay it forward and do the same. I also need to earn so extra cash to upgrade her clothes. So to be fair I divided up the clothes evenly between the two. When sorting to sell, I have two bags one for cool weather clothes right now to sell and then another bag for summer and spring type clothes to sell when it's warmer. By doing this, I'm saving time at the 2nd hand store which will only take cute clothes in season. I'm a hardcore sorter and organizer, so you can see my enjoyment here. Plus, by doing this as she grows I'm never overwhelmed at the clothes pile I have to sort. Also, I just cleared out a whole drawer in her dresser for the next size up! I love organizing, it just makes me so happy.

Happy Saturday Sorting :)

Functional Friday No. 18

Hummingbird Feeder.

This object is functional for the birds but also pretty entertaining! I think it's wonderful to create a space for wild animals to feel welcome. I know putting sugar water out in a glass jar is cheating, and I plan to plant some hummingbird friendly flowers but for now this is my functional bird feeder.

even large birds want some of my sweetness.

sugar water recipe (dye free)
1/4 cup raw sugar, I use the left over packets from my visits to coffee shops
2 cups water

boil the water, add sugar and stir until dissolved. the red colored food is poison, it KILLS them use this raw sugar recipe and you'll have birds all day, everyday.

Happy Functional Friday!
