Downloading Fonts

So, this weekend I had a few minutes to myself, and as I have been working on personal event invitations over the past month I realized I needed to dress up my font choices, so I downloaded a lot.  These are some of my favorites. Click the image to download it yourself, and at the bottom of this post I've included instructions for installing a font on a windows PC {I'm not lucky enough to have a mac, yet}

{my favorite font from picnik!}

and while I was searching for fonts I found this, this and this.

To install;
Open "Download' folder
Select the newly downloaded fonts
Right click
Select "Extract All"
Open "Control Panel"
Open "Fonts" Folder
Copy the extracted font documents into your "Fonts" folder.
You many need to restart your computer after intalling them into the "fonts" folder, but I did not.

Happy Font Downloading!

D.I.Y.: A Year of Cloth Diapering

What we did ourselves, how it worked, and why you should too...

In this part review, part advice post, regarding cloth diapering; I'm going to tell you what I loved, what I didn't, how I cheated and so much more...

Loved.
I loved that I never really had to panic and rush out and buy diapers in the middle of the night.  i loved that I never had to budget diaper money into our weekly expenses. I love that I mixed in the dirty diapers with our regular laundry thus not really creating any new water waste.  Which is a big deal in the desert.  I love that nothing but soft, clean, chemical free fabric is on my baby's bum.  I love that cloth diapers are so much freaking cuter than those paper disposables.  I love that cloth diapering is popular because there are so many choices and so many well designed options out there.

Hated.
I hate/hated folding and sorting all these different styles.  I have 'laxed off lately and just shove them all in the drawer now, but before, each style and type was used at a different part of the day and separated in the draw, not worth the effort mamas! I hate when {even though rare} she would poop in her diapers.  I hate spraying diapers out in the front yard which is where I pre-rinse the poopy ones.  I hate line drying all of the diapers while my hands are full, even though, as you'll read later that's a huge help to keeping them last longer.

Cheated.
I cheated by doing a combination of cloth diapering and Elimination Communication {references here and here}.  When Cupcake was about 3 months old or a bit earlier, I read about it and started doing it.  I'm a little lazy.  So, I don't worry sooo much about pee but we got really good at it and she pretty much only poops in the toilet, which is so nice, and makes cloth diapering so much easier!  I also cheated a few times with disposable, but only really good environmentally friendly ones, seven generation was used the first week or so.  I wanted to avoid using cloth with the notorious meconium poop and also once while we were traveling because my access to a working washer and dryer was limited. Otherwise, we are a pretty well working cloth diapering family, below are my reviews and suggestions for each style diaper we use.

Gdiapers are really great for several reasons, the first being the flexibility, at first I was a little nervous about cloth diapering and these allow you to swap out biodegradable liners with the cloth liners.  Which we took advantage of while traveling.  The disposable liners are actually flush-able.  Anyway, the problem with these, which may be my fault, is the Velcro is wearing out quicker than I'd like.  I did put them in the dryer because like I said earlier I don't like going outside one handed to hang up diapers.  For the cost to quantity ratio, these are a great deal, because you don't need many shells, just a few to swap the liners in and out of.  The liners are holding up great and these are my husband's favorite type because he doesn't have to carry a set of bulky diapers when heading out and about.

These are so soft!  I love the whole set up of how it's an all in one and you can adjust the sizes with the snaps so they fit from very little to pretty big.  These were my favorite until I bought the next ones I'm about to talk about.  I don't like how the velcro folds in on the tabs when being washed because now, they're slightly stiff and wearing out more than I'd like.  They're is also no organic option, unfortunately, because I think that's so important.  These are still the only diapers I use at bedtime because none of the other diapers are as absorbent as these ones.  They are a little pricey since you have to change the whole diaper about $30 for one.  I got a few as gifts and then with some baby shower money.  They are definitely worth the investment for a few, because seriously they're so absorbent.

All in one Organic Bum Genius
These are my NEW favorite!  I just invested in these with some of Sonja's birthday money.  They are organic!  They are also an all in one.  I bought them at Zoolikins and they were $25.  They are all the benefits of the totsbots above, but without the velcro issues, I love the snaps I just think they're going to last a lot longer.  I'm also stoked that the part touching my daughter is organic cotton, not only because it's on her bottom all day, but because I know that that in itself is less impact on the environment.  Also, they were the same price or cheaper {than what I paid} for the totsbots.  They're both great!

So this one was on sale and I'm really glad I got it.  It's like the same as the totsbots, but not quite as well made, as soft or as absorbent BUT it was only $10 and in cloth diaper land that's practically free.  I like the shell of this one, the design is cute and the actual material feels almost silky.  When I say not as good as the totsbots I mean, almost as good.  Really great option for those on a budget.

Snap-EZ ECO shell and hemp insert
Finally, the snap-ez.  I found a stash of these on craigslist 15 for $60, so a really great deal!  They were the large size. So, Cupcake is still just starting to fit into them now.  They work well, but I don't love how I have to remember to pull out the insert before washing and drying.  Also, the fact that you have to change the whole set out is kind of annoying (similar to the gdiapers, but those keep the exterior shell, these don't).  I do really like these, though; if she poops in them, because there is only one main piece to spray out, as opposed to the gdiaper which has three parts, that can all get dirty. I do like the snap system too and I think they're cute and basic.  They're unisex which is nice, because you can use them for multiple babies.  Cupcake is the third baby to use these ones, as you can tell the hemp inserts are well worn but absorb just the same, probably better since they're broken in.

I haven't had any washer or dryer problems so far,  I use seven generations detergent or the most eco friendly I can find at Costco.  I will, also, once and a while, do a bleach or vinegar rise just to get a good clean.  Otherwise, I can't think of much else you might need to know, if you have questions or comments leave some below.

Momma Monday No. 57

From our One Year Portrait Session last week.

My daughter is no longer a baby. This sweet girl is a little toddler.  Not that she hasn't been acting like one for months now.  I have to say though, the changes in these past few days are remarkable.  It's the little things like her responding to commands, like bite; she takes a bite of her strawberry, blow; she blows her nose, hand; she gives me her hand.  It's like I'm interacting with a real life person, not to give babies a bad reputation or anything but sometimes I felt like I was holding a doll, a beautiful, breathing doll, I would dress the doll, change the doll, feed the doll and while I loved her more than anything and already miss those sleeping, sweaty chest moments, I'm happy to have a little one who is full of wonder, movement, comprehension.

We recently had her one year check up where she weighed 17 pounds, was 29 inches long.  Unfortunately, her doctor was not impressed with her growth and suggested I feed her more, a lot more.  She is mostly nursing but in quick short sessions, so probably not getting as much hind milk as her doctor would like.  And of course I'm happy she's never recommended supplementing with formula, even though Cupcake has always been on the small side. But now I need some help, anyone have any good baby food suggestions?  We'd like to stick with child lead weaning meaning no pureed foods {that you don't eat pureed}, and lots of unprocessed items too.  Let me know!

On another note, I'm not sure what I want to do with this Momma Monday Feature, it's never really been what I had in mind, I was always documenting too much, or leaving something out, and I think for now... I'm done with it.  Maybe, I'll reinvent it later, but for now, I'm going to focus on my projects and daughter and update the day to day, and week to week activities on my tumblr.

As for this blog, I've got lots of post party projects coming up this week, so you too can host an event with sweet details.  And maybe I'll bring back my Functional Friday Feature... anythings possible.

Happy Momma Monday!

D.I.Y. Pasta Sauce

Everyweek my husband makes pasta sauce from scratch and while it does take a while it's totally worth it. BUT this past week I read a great trick for saving time.  Blend the tomatoes.  Brilliant.  Here he had been boiling, peeling and seeding them {and loosing lots of nutrients by doing so} and all he had to do was blend them?!

So here's what you'll need:
10-20 organic tomatoes {serves about 3-4 people}
fresh basil
organic onion chopped
olive oil
garlic chopped
various other seasoning of your choice, including thyme, rosemary and more.

What you'll do with it:
Start by heating up a splash of olive oil in a pot and adding chopped garlic
{medium heat is best to not burn the garlic}.
Chop tomatoes into fourths, discard any unwanted parts the stem or bruises.
Fill blender up half way with tomatoes.
Blend.
Once well blended, or a tomato smoothie is made, pour into hot pot with the garlic and oil.
Repeat until all the tomatoes are blended  and added to the pot.
Add chopped garlic.
Add basil and other seasoning.
Let simmer on low for several hours.
Once all the water is extracted you will have a thick sauce that looks like what you buy at the store, heat up your pasta and serve.

yum.

Cupcake is One!

Yesterday was the big O-1.  I invited about 70 people total, which isn't actually that many, it was only 27 physical invites to mostly couples and families.  And, although a few of our closests are touring Europe right now, and a few others couldn't make it, we did have a great turn out of baby friends and family too.

Here are some of the event photos and then some of the family and friends photos...
The banner I made, with directions here.

D.I.Y. Ball Jar Lids

For Sonja's 1st Birthday {TOMORROW!} I made some ball jar lids.  I had a hard time finding any that I liked and looked like what I wanted {specifically, I wanted something that only had one hole just barely big enough for the straw}, so I made some.

Supplies:
Ball Jar Lids
Drill
Drill case or surface to drill on and into
Drill Bit Size 1/4 inch or bigger depending on your straw.

Start with basic lid

Get 1/4 Size drill bit

Rest inner lid on top of surface with a hole or okay to drill into.

This is my drill's case, the handle of it to be more specific.

Drill directly into lid, anywhere you choose.

Careful, sometimes it's not a smooth hole
and you'll have to pull these, sand them or discard them to avoid injuries.

I only had like 4 of these out of 24 though.

This is the normal scrap, so keep an eye out for them, they're very sharp.

Make sure to collect and discard the scraps from the holes.
SERIOUS CHOCKING HAZARD!

Finished Product!

Sorry the lighting is awful, the only chance I have to do these types of projects is while baby is sleeping or when someone else is watching her.

Good Luck!

Baked Pear, Granola and Ice Cream

Top with slice of butter and granola.
Bake in toaster oven at 400* for 30 minutes or until soft.

and Honey.
So Good.

Pear Gorgonzola Pizza

I've mentioned this pizza before as mini pizzas but this time we made a large square pizza with fresh from the farmer's market pears.

Do you have a dinner you just love to repeat?! share it below in the comments, I'm always looking for more dinner ideas!

Link Love no. 3

I'm not saying there's a right or a wrong, but I do believe there is a CHOICE and why not let that little boy make the choice once he's older, if you choose to cut, he can NEVER undo it.

why you might not need a STD vaccine for a newborn, or at least why this mom thinks not.

I might have to have another baby just to use these baby shower invites!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE paper-source and this is my favorite paper at the moment.  Always accepting gifts ;)

Women {and Men} you are NOT crazy, you are not over reacting.  This culture is crazy this culture is destructive, this culture wants you to feel like you're the problem.

Almost time for us to decorate for Halloween around here!

Going to do this with the bread bags you can't recycle at the store, maybe make some shade for the garden, or as a giant "canvas" base....

Can we all stop being so wasteful and start being awesome?

Can not stop laughing. (tumblr is not very source friendly sorry, please take credit for this if it's yours)

sweet use of mod podge and cookie cutters!

My belly (and my photography project) mentioned here.  How cool is that?

Why I hate our culture/society/government, no woman should be forced to labor and deliver a baby with her legs shackled together, not only for her safety but for that of the baby's! and what of that of a healthy breastfeeding relationship. I am in tears over this.  And all because of a non-violent "crime"

Family Photographs Belly Cast

A D.I.Y. and How To guide.

Before.

Remember over a year ago when I posted this?
Well, I decided that a one year deadline should be put in place and I should finish this cast in time for Sonja's Birthday this weekend.

So I did...

Casting Stone for making the cast harder and more durable.
Step 1.  Once the cast is dry, mix casting stone according to directions and dampen the cast before applying.
Step 2. Apply and Smooth over cast.
Step 3. Let Dry.
Step 4. Once dry, apply Acrylic Primer a.k.a. Gesso

Above and Below: left is casting stone, right is gesso
See the difference?

Step 5. Allow Gesso to dry, while waiting, print old family photos with the "mirrored" setting on a LASER printer, this will not work with inkjet, you must use a toner black printer or copier ONLY!
Step 6. cut out images, coat with acrylic gel medium or mod podge on the image side of the paper then place face down. DO NOT PUT ANYTHING ON THE BACK OF THE PAPER!
If you'd like you can lay out the images where you want to put them so you remember how they fit, but do not glue them down or collage them face up!
Step 7. After the gel medium or mod podge has dried overnight, use a sponge to get the paper wet, rub the paper fibers off with your finger and expose the photo transfer.
To watch a video on photo transfers click here.

This is in progress some images have transferred and some are waiting to be transferred.
Step 8. After completing all transfers and adding paint or designs, I like to epoxy my work to make it shine.

I use a two part epoxy mix and combine, then pour over the piece.  Make sure to have a trash bag under the project, the epoxy will NOT come off once dried and is toxic to touch when wet.
After.

Here are the detail shots of the finished belly cast...
