Momma Monday no. 29

This past week Sonja turned 5 months old!  I don't know where the time has gone.  All I know is last year at this time I was trying to wrap my head around the fact that there was a new person growing in my tummy AND we hadn't told our friends or most of our family yet.  Now, here we are with our amazing daughter!

So, I thought this week I'd reflect and recap all the common parent concepts/questions/subjects.

On Parenting: we are practicing attachment parenting, sort of.  I set Sonja down when I need to do something awkward or "dangerous" - like cooking by a hot stove.  Or when I'm cleaning the bathroom.  Or when I go to the bathroom, usually.

On Breastfeeding:  Sonja is still exclusively breastfed.  She has only had a sip of water, when she yoinked a cup out of her Aunt Emily's hands.  And the other night I was juicing some grapefruits and had the juice all over my hands when she shoved my fingers into her mouth.  She shot her tongue out and drooled all over the place, so I doubt any of that juice actually made its way into her tummy.

On Bottles:  We do still use a bottle (full of human milk obviously) for when I'm at work (for an hour a day) or when I go to yoga.

On Pacifiers: I use my boob as a pacifier.  She has never had a silicone/rubber pacifier.  She only comfort suckles at night right before falling asleep and then I remove my nipple and we all go to sleep wonderfully.

On Co-Sleeping (bed sharing, sleep sharing or family bed): Sonja still sleeps in bed with us.  In the middle of the bed.  I want to cry when I think about little babies all alone in their room, they have to scream to get their parents to hear them, to know if they're hungry.  BUT if you're afraid of rolling over on them I understand, that's why we used a close secure sleeper, basically like bumper pads so we were trained to not roll on her.  Now, we are used to her and neither of us move much in our sleep.

On Cloth Diapering: We are still using the Gdiapers.  But I'm no longer sure if these are the BEST.  They are perfect for us because we're also using E.C. (see below) and she doesn't really poop in them.  But, for parents who are still changing poopy diapers 1. I'm sorry. 2. Gdiapers don't always contain the whole mess as nicely as I might expect.
I just throw the diapers in with our wash, the breastmilk poops wash right out, we'll see how it goes once we introduce food.

Speaking of Food:  We plan on doing the child lead weaning process of letting Sonja decide when she wants less milk and more real food.  We don't plan on pureeing her food, even though I could with my uber fancy food processor.  The point is that she will grab food and if we think it's appropriate we will let her eat it, un-cooked and mushed, just right off our plates.  She won't be able to swallow the large object so there is no risk of choking.  She will be allowed to explore the food with her mouth and develop the reflexes for eating.  We are going to wait until after 6 months to let her decide, because before 6 months, babies digestive systems are "open" meaning anything besides breastmilk can enter the blood stream through the intestines triggering allergic reactions.  After 6 months it's a closed system, so we can introduce things as we like.  We will NOT be serving Sonja Honey, peanuts or strawberries (or probably any fruits) until after 1 year, for various allergy and preference reasons.

On Potty Training also known as Elimination Communication (E.C.): Sonja goes to the bathroom the majority of the time on her becoPotty or on the normal toilet.  Sometimes she still pees in her diaper and rarely poops in her diaper.  I'd say about 70% of her pees are on the toilet and about 90% of her poops are on the toilet.  we started EC at about 2 months when I first heard about it.  I make a "SSSSSSS" sound when I hold her over the toilet after naps and feedings and she pees.  I also do it randomly throughout the day, when I feel like she needs to go.  We also used to do the grunting to signal poop but we don't have to anymore usually she just goes.

On sign language: Right now we sign "Potty" and "Milk" eventually we will introduce more vocab but, seriously, this is all she does right now!

On Toys: We have a few wooden toys and a few stuffed toys, both types are made from natural wood or fibers and are untreated.  She has wooden rattles, stuffed sighfoos and books.  That's it.  I doubt we'll ever buy her much else, definitely no action figures or Barbies!

On Teething: None yet! although she has been drooling, coughing, fussing and grabbing her ears.  All signs of the inevitable. I was a late teether (10 months) so who knows when we'll actually see the little whites.

I think those are the most common issues with being a parent, if I forgot to mention something, remind me in the comments!

Happy Momma Monday!

Ceramics; Human Figure Pouring Vessel

Here is my recent ceramics project.  The assignment was to create a vessle that reflected the duality of human.  Since, I've been surrounded with the concept that boobs are sexual, and I'm breastfeeding (non-sexual) I thought I'd focus on the duality of the woman figure.

Wet Clay, WSO, Slab Construction

The handle, sort of looks like a woman, (accidental)

Unloaded from the kiln, post bisque fire

It's a pouring vessel, guess where it pours from ;)  Had to test to make sure the holes were still there.
Hand painted glazed, ready for glaze fire (cone 10)
all done!

What do you think? Anyone want to buy it?  message me here!

Nap = Cleaning Time for Mommy!

Okay. So this is just that big of a deal.  Normally, if I try to lay Cupcake down for a nap while she's sleeping, she instantly wakes up screaming until I pick her up, BUT! today I knew I HAD to sweep and mop otherwise, Husband would be sincerely disappointed about him working and me staying home.  This is a chronic issue for me, to clean the house, be a "good" house wife, while being a great mama.  But today, I was able to sweep, mop, unload the dishwasher, spot dust and wipe the walls down. ALL WHILE SONJA SLEPT.  It was awesome.  I don't think I've ever been so excited about housework before.  I LOVE when Cupcake sleeps on me and when I wear her, but she is starting to get heavy and sweeping while baby wearing isn't fun, ya know?!

P.S. Nesting; I think you showed up 5 months late. Oh well, better late than never!

The Park no. 4

We went to the park today for our weekly field trip and we saw the ducks and some swans.  Such a lovely day.  Too bad Sonja slept through the whole experience :(

At least she was awake for our hike this week.  We even saw her hawk.  Her second middle name, Chetan is a Lakota word for Hawk spirit.  Husband saw no less than 4 Hawks the week Cupcake was born.  2 of them coming up close to him, something rare for a hawk to do.  So we decided to recognize that natural wonder and name her after them.  A Hawk Family lives in the mountain preserve by our house, and while hiking sometimes we see one or all of them.

Happy Natural Wondering and Non-Schooling!

Community Garden

So, I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

I have a decent size back yard, that is more than half dirt.  I've prepped a small area for a garden (the image above) but need time, money, planter soil (our top soil isn't the best) and some community involvement to get the rest of the area going.  So, Phoenix friends (in real life or otherwise) I'm opening my back yard up to the opportunity of a community garden.

Right now I have what I'll consider 2 shares invested in the garden.
To invest in a share you will need to donate 3-5 ORGANIC seed packets, and 2 bags (or the cost) of Organic PLANTER soil (not to be confused with potter's soil) if you want more than 1 share you just multiply these requirements by the amount of shares you want.

I will cover the cost of water.
You can come pull weeds with me or not.
You can help pick fruits and veggies or not.
You can bring your compostable items and add them to my compost to help our future produce grow or not.

I will keep track of who invested what seeds and I will divide the produce accordingly based on contributed shares.

This is similar to community supported agriculture or CSA but I'm taking it one step further, as you will physically be welcomed to help maintain the garden (if I know you, or if you are referred by someone I know in real life).

I have 12 shares open as of 2/21/2011.  It is important that any and all friends interested email me here as soon as possible as the spring planting season is upon us.

I can not guarantee that we will get a lot of crops but if we do you will have the freshest, pesticide free, organic produce available to you.

Yay, for Community Gardening!

Garden Update February 2011

This past weekend we got a lot of rain.  And for the desert that means ANY.  It rained both Saturday and Sunday.  I've been meaning to, for the past few weeks, to get my seeds into the ground; but with fear of one last frost, I've been procrastinating.  Anyway, the rain was inspirational and I put on some shoes and my husband's North Face jacket (thanks JXN!) and got to work.  In the rain.  I had already prepped the soil (with some organic store bought planter soil) so it was damp for planting the seeds.  I labeled the popcicle sticks with the plants I was sowing and followed the directions on the packets.  I'm excited to see how they come in.  I planted 3 seeds in each hole and will cull the 2 weakest plants as they mature.  This is a permacultre practice that allows you to grow the most food in the smallest space.  And while I'm not a fan of agriculture (hunting and gathering is the best!), I do live in an urban environment, so I make it work.  Some of the seeds should sprout in as short as 7-10 days!  You can bet I'll keep you posted as the plants come in :)

This is the front yard's herb garden I also started a few weeks ago, the only thing to start coming up is the spinach which I planted in those 4 little black pots.  And I just noticed the fennugreek is sprouting as well.  Bur, I'm still waiting on the rest of the seeds to sprout!

Happy Gardening!

Vegan Pizza Crust

Below you will find  vegan and vegetation recipes for pizza crusts.'
Husband kneaded the dough and made his pizza crust.
Our pile of cheese for topping, you can sub mock cheese OR do sauce and veggies only.
We topped one with pizza sauce and onions finished with mozzarella and Monterey jack cheese
and the other with spinach (no sauce), goats cheese and mozzarella cheese
Here's the finished spinach and goat cheese one up close.

What you'll need FOR EACH PIZZA:

Vegetarian:
2 Cups flour (I used a mix of whole wheat and white whole wheat unbleached)
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup milk
1/4 cup olive or avocado oil
2 tablespoons olive or avocado oil

vegan option:
1/2 Cups flour (I used a mix of whole wheat and white whole wheat unbleached)
1 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons olive or avocado oil

What to do with it:
Heat oven to 425 degrees.  Mix ingredients, except last amount of oil, into a bowl.  Mix well then knead on counter top.  Roll out dough, place on baking pan.  Fold up edges to create a crust.  Pre-bake for 8 minutes Brush dough with remaining oil and top with desired toppings. bake for an additional 8 minutes.  Our crusts never browned so go by texture not color if you think you need more time.

Lovin' Hut

Okay, so I didn't make this food, BUT I love this Vegan restaurant so I thought I'd share my favorite meal from there.
Above: The Menu

Spring Rolls (no. 2)

Wontons (no.6)

and the popular; Lemon Grass "Chicken"

If you haven't been to a Lovin' Hut by you and you're Vegan, I highly suggest!  They are a little interesting, as they all worship a divine woman who preaches Veganism.  But the food is tasty, and always does the job when I'm craving a meat type dish.

Momma Monday no. 28

My weekly reflection as a mother of an almost 5 month old:

Monday was Valentine's day and I may or may not have purchased something from this shop a few weeks ago.  When I was pregnant and browsing etsy, I found something and told Husband that when I lost all my pregnancy weight I would get it.  Turns out that weight disappeared just a few short weeks before Valentine's day; so I splurged.  And the wonderful handmaker, herself, took one look at Sonja and couldn't resist making her this:
SO CUTE RIGHT?!

ahh.  So thankful!  Pease, check out her gorgeous etsy shop! Even her wrapping is elegant:
I texted this photo to Husband for Valentines day, but dressed it up on picnik.com for this blog;
Thinking about getting this sweet neck tat.  what do you think ;)

Some photos from the week:
Diaperless baby trying to crawl

Sleeping on my chest

They mention Eats on Feets in this magazine!
A magazine I get for free, since I bought some Gdiapers online.

Our dogs terrified The Sweetness this week while barking at these two exploring pups
one was a Great Dane and the other a lil' Pug

About potty training; I guess I spoke too soon about the dry diapers and potty free nights because on Wednesday I woke up at 5am and 9am to puddles of pee on the towel in my bed... In more interesting news, I spent the morning crocheting with our midwife and her assistant.  Tracy is wonderful and practically acted as a doula for me while I was in labor.  While Shell and I were crocheting, she held Sonja so I could learn how to start a crocheted hat! This is what it looks liked like on Wednesday:

Also, I've been dreading using the breast pump to get milk to donate.  Last time I tried the manual pump it hurt and so I'm sort of scared of the electric one.  Anyway, today I grabbed a bag and tested out hand expressing into the bag instead of a bottle and it worked!

Here's a photo from a last minute grocery store trip, for things you can't get at farmer's markets like toilet paper and a few things I forgot like leeks and wine.
Sonja pushing the cart from her wrap

Sonja must be teething, because on Friday, she threw a 40 minute fit for no apparent reason.  She cried and cried.  I tried nursing her but she would only latch for a second and pull right off.  She was acting tired but wouldn't sleep and she kept trying to eat her's and my own hands.  Then all of the sudden, nothing, she was fine, back to her squirming self.  Also, she started crawling today, sort of.  She goes AWAY from the object placed in front of her, she pushes herself backwards.  So counter culture right ;)  going the opposite way as all the other babies.  But any day now I suppose she'll start making the move forward.  I can't believe she's growing up so quickly. I mean, check out this photo:

Oh, Hello, sitting-up-by-yourself-baby!
p.s. we're not Raiders fans, this blanket is just super soft and it was a gift to my husband as a child :)

Well I think that's all for my weekly update.  Happy Momma Monday!

Crochet Beret!

I just completed my first crocheted beret!

Magic Circle Ten to start then crocheting around and around adding and subtracting loops to fit as such.  Husband pointed out that it looks like a partisan fighter beret, hence this link: Beret Project.

Happy Crocheting!

Baked Pie-less Apples

On a cloudy Sunday morning in Phoenix, I decided to have a fancy breakfast with my husband and these Pie-less apples are the result.  My sister made something similar once before, but I just sort of winged this one.

What you'll need:
Apple
Strudel Mixture (3/4 cup flour, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 cup brown sugar, oatmeal.  mix then add 1/2 cup butter)

What you'll do:
Cut apple in half, and remove core.  sprinkle with as much of the strudel mixture as you'd like and save the rest in your fridge for another apple pie-less morning.  (The mix I used was left over from when I made apple pie 2 weeks ago, which is what the measurements above are actually for) put in toaster oven at 375 degrees for 25 minutes.

Waffles pictured from the recipe here.

D.I.Y. Milkmaid Braids

I watched Danielle from Sometimes Sweet and her Super Sweet milkmaid braids demo and I was inspired to do my own!  I usually do a French braid or something when my hair is dirty or sloppy but I love this look so I copied it today!

Cute right? Thanks Danielle!

What Sonja Wore no. 3

These Bummis are usually reserved for bed time since they're so absorbent, BUT! little Cupcake here has been having some nights pee free!  So, I usually leave them on her in the mornings.  AND if you look closely, you'll notice that we don't have to button any of the one size fits all snaps.  Big Girl!

Here's her lamb onesie from Primary Jane. All organic hand made adorableness!

I matched it with some purple polka dot leggings from another Circo outfit she has. (a gift from Grandma B. at Christmas). Sockless baby because it's already so warm here, 78 degrees today!

Well, that's all Sonja wore.

Sadly, my outfits are rarely as cute...
