I found this old shirt in my closet with a few tiny stains and a hole. I think the material is just the softest so instead of tossing it or cutting it into rags I decided to make The Cupcake a sweet skirt.
I found a few tutorials and patterns for super cute skirts like this, this and this. But I wanted something slightly different so I made this:

I found a few tutorials and patterns for super cute skirts like this, this and this. But I wanted something slightly different so I made this:
Here's how:
I used one of her current skirts as a template. I just outlined the general shape and cut that out.
and then I cut another strip to use for ruffles.
I also cut up another shirt for more ruffle fabric and for this tee shirt
Inside out.
Sew the right and left sides together.
Now this is a skirt! too simple.
Fold top over and sew.
This is creating the area for the draw string.
Outside right (as opposed to inside out)
Cut SMALL hole for draw sting.
I used the scraps from the tee shirt and you can see it's about 2 inches thick
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP.
Use a safety pin to pull the draw string through.
Insert and start working around to the other side.
The safety pin gives you something to hold and pull!
All the way around.
Pull through until both strings are even.
This could be a completed skirt, VERY SIMPLE!
Took like 5 minutes to sew.
OR...
You can add ruffles.
sew...
Top layer done, SHOULD HAVE STARTED WITH THE BOTTOM LAYER!
Add second row of ruffles.
Pin.
Sewn.
Line up the seams when adding the ruffles.
Last Row!
NOTE: ITS EASIER TO HAVE THE RUFFLE FOLDS GO WITH THE MACHINE INSTEAD OF AGAINST IT. above is the correct way to fold the fabric.
Keep sewing...
DONE!
Also, next time my top ruffle will be cut to half size of the others, duh, it looks too long compared to the hidden half of the others.
Happy Shirt into Skirt Upcycling!
Wow! I am sharing his w my Godmother! She would adore your blog! She is teaching me to upcycle! You seem like a pro! How long have you been doing this?!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I just sort of make it all up as I go. I've been a serious recycler {I have a recycle logo tattoo :) } for years now, and upcycling and precycling are big parts of that too. I'm going to be sharing a few great upcycling links on my next link love post, so keep an eye out!
