Fall Garden 2012 Update No. 3

Technically, it's now 2013 but our garden is still hanging on from fall 2012 .  I'll probably replant in February but thought I'd share one last fall update.  Since, thankfully, the frost didn't kill everything!

Above is our orange tree with just a few fruits this year.  Our tree is new just 4 short years old.  This is the first year the fruit actually tastes like oranges instead of just water!

Also, the lettuce, kale and carrots held on through the frost, I covered them with a blanket/quilt at night and let them sun during the day.  

Unfortunately, our pumpkins and winter squash didn't make it, and we never got to enjoy their fruit.  This year I'll make sure to have seeds in the ground no later than August 1st!

Fall 2012 Garden Update no. 2

What's growing in our garden this Fall, an update...

We invested in these lovely metal yard dividers to keep the dogs out of the garden.

They sort of work.

 Here's what the whole garden looks like.

This is Oregano I purchased at Trader Joe's and have been too busy to replant. 

This is our Spaghetti Squash. {it doesn't look this good after the "cold" front we've had this week, but I think it will come back just fine in a few days.}

Kale and other leafy greens sneaking in the photo. 

I was so excited to see this little tomato plant, but when I checked on it today, I couldn't find it.

That cold front must have killed it. 

Spring salad mix.

My Fairy Tale and Italian Squashes were doing good up until a few weeks ago, I think they're done for, but here's to hoping. {I still water the whole area, so they might make a comeback}

Fall 2012 Garden Update no. 1

Meant to share these back in October, but here is the start to our Fall Garden!  We actually have a lot more progress than these photos show.  So, I'll be sure to snap some photographs this week and give you another update!

Until then, here are our happy seedlings from this season...

 The Pumpkin was started indoors in August and transferred Successfully! outside in September.

This fall, I planted Spaghetti Squash, Kale, Lettuce, Carrots, Tomatoes, Yellow Squash, Fairy Tale Squash and Pumpkins!  Everything was planted from seed and the tomatoes are the only things I haven't seen yet.  Another update coming soon!

The Start of our Fall Garden 2012

Last week Sonja and I started our seeds for our fall garden.  It's late August and I started freaking out because to get pumpkins in time for Halloween you have to plant seeds early August.  I hope by starting them inside and waiting until it cools off and {until I can properly manage the garden} they'll be here in time.  But if not, at least they'll be here for Thanksgiving!

The Supplies! 

I went to a coffee tasting at Starbucks and they had these mini cups, after the tasting I asked if I could have the used cups for my seeds.  They looked at me like I was crazy but gave them to me anyway.  So, yay for upcycling and free seed starting "pots"

I filled them with soil and then the pumpkin seeds below:

It's beyond important to label seeds so when they sprout you know how to care for them, each plant is different and baby plants need a lot of attention.

I also started a few other plants and labeled each cup individually.

Once we had everything prepped we added our seeds.

My sister in law watered them while we were on vacation and I'm proud to say almost all of them are sprouting!   Including the seeds I saved from a fairy squash last year.  I can not explain how excited I am that I was able to save seeds and dry them properly and store them properly myself!!! I hope they survive the transplanting process.

I'll update you again in about a month once we see some major plant progress.
